Editorial by Gabriel Chardin, French National Organizer of the EUCYS contest

As the French National Organizer of the EUCYS contest, it is a pleasure and an honour to welcome all of you, contestants and escorts, to this 21st edition of the EUCYS contest, twenty years after its creation in 1989 in Brussels. The “Palais de la Découverte”, created in 1937 by Jean Perrin, a physics Nobel prize winner, will host this competition. As an institution dedicated to scientific knowledge, “Palais de la Découverte” appears ideally suited to greet this important event.

With the help of all the members of the organizing committee, of the team of students of Université Paris-Sud, and the backing of CEA and “Sciences à l'Ecole”, I hope that this EUCYS-2009 edition will be a success, and that you will enjoy both the contest and your stay in Paris.

Being myself a scientist, and more precisely an astroparticle physicist, at the head of a laboratory involving about 100  researchers, professors, technicians and engineers, I am convinced that events such as the EUCYS contest are of the utmost importance for the  future prosperity and quality of life in Europe, and more generally in the world. It is indeed extremely important that young students develop original ideas and discover the difficulties, but also the joy, associated with scientific activities.

In this spirit, I hope that the research that you have already conducted in preparation to this contest will be the first stage towards a scientific career.

Please receive my best wishes for your success in EUCYS-2009 !
